CELEBRATING ICONS WEARING ICONS

What many don’t know is that Tretorn is the second oldest sneaker manufacture in the world. The Dunker family were big sports enthusiasts and with the knowledge how to vulcanize rubber, Henry Dunker decided to start going into the sports business. 1st May 1900, we produced our first rubber sole sneaker. A huge innovation in footwear and the beginning of a new era for Tretorn.

In 1967 Tretorn launched Nylite, the first luxury tennis sneaker in the world. It became a favorite when tennis stars like Björn Borg and Martina Navratilova dominated the world’s stage. Borg wore the shoe both on and off the court, and it rocketed to celebrity status after being used at both Wimbledon and US-open in the 70’s. By the late 80’s we had also established ourselves in the world of fashion and the Nylite was named the must-have in The Official Preppy Handbook.

Since then, many legends have been rocking the Nylite sneakers. Let’s celebrate our icons wearing icons!

Björn Borg – one of the greatest tennis players, and one of our biggest ambassadors, of all time. With him wearing the Nylite both on and off the court on Wimbledon and US Open in the 70’s, it rocketed to celebrity status and became a must-have all over the world.

Aretha Franklin – Queen of soul and a true icon. And here on an old print ad for Tretorn Nylite Sneakers.

On the album cover of ”52nd Street” in 1978, artist Billy Joel was rocking Tretorn Nylite. A true icon defining style.

One of the poster girls for Tretorn Nylite was actress Margot Kidder. She is mainly known for her performance as Lois Lane in the first Superman films, but Margot was also an environmental activist, often protesting for environmental and anti-nuclear causes.

During the 30th Cannes Film Festival in 1977, bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger wore Nylite. Schwarzenegger is also a Hollywood action film icon and was the 38th Governor of California

American film director Irvin Kershner, who made films such as The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars), Never Say Never Again (James Bond), and RoboCop 2, wore Tretorn Nylites. Here on the set of shooting "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" in 1979 together with Mark Hamill a.k.a. Luke Skywalker.

In the multiple Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated movie All The President's Men in 1976, actor Dustin Hoffman wore Tretorn Nylite. Huffman was starring as one of the leading characters, reporter Carl Bernstein.

In the first season of Charlie's Angels, 1976–1977, Farrah Fawcett starred as private investigator Jill Munroe. Here wearing Tretorn Nylite.

Legendary Elvis Presley wore Tretorn Nylite during his vacation in Hawaii in March 1977, just months before he passed away. Elvis Presley was actually a close friend of Tretorn. A true icon.

In 2009 we did an exclusive sneakers collaboration with Comme De Garçon. Kanye West was one of many stars who wore the Nylite made in collaboration with Comme De Garçon.

André Benjamin 3000, an American rapper best known for being part of hip-hop duo Outkast, created a sneakers collection with Tretorn in 2018. André 3000 used the classic Nylite, but with his own playful design.

Icons wearing icons. A proud part of our heritage and future.
