What is a Chelsea boot?
Chelsea boots have been an iconic footwear style for decades, for both men and women. It's a tight-fitting ankle boot with front and back pull tabs and elasticated sides for easy on and off, a classic design feature from the boots' historic origins.
Why is it called the Chelsea boot?
The ankle boot got its name from its popularity in Chelsea, a small town in the UK.
History of the Chelsea boot
J. Sparkes Hall, one of Queen Victoria's shoemakers, designed Chelsea boots around the 1840s to be easy to pull on and off the Chelsea boot was originally created for walking and riding.
In 1961, theatre and ballet shoe manufacturer Anello & Davide created a variation of the Chelsea boot with Cuban heels and pointed toes for the Beatles, after John Lennon and Paul McCartney saw some Chelsea boots in their shop window and ordered four pairs with higher, Cuban heels - this style became known as Beatle boots.
Chelsea boots remain popular with both men and women as a wardrobe necessity for the fashionable individual who doesn't want to compromise on either style or function.
